A Letter to Friends

Dear Friends,

This is a fundraiser for the Dickson family who are facing financial stress from medical expenses not covered by medicare or insurance in excess of $800 per month and an immediate need to buy a $7,000 insulin pump for their son Nate. Billy and Krista Dickson were blessed in 2006 with a beautiful baby girl. They named her Faith - but little did they know that their own faith would be tested when they would find out the devastating news that their beautiful daughter had Type I Diabetes. There is no cure for Type 1 Diabetes and children with this disease must have multiple insulin injections daily or continually infuse insulin through a pump for their entire life. In compliance with their doctors advice, Billy and Krista would face one of their biggest obstacles - having to sacrifice one of their incomes in order to provide the necessary round the clock care their daughter needed. But inspite of the major challenges and difficulties, our friends managed to stay strong and began to hope for their families future. They worried and anguished over what would become of Faith should anything ever happen to them. Who would take care of her and watch over her in their absence? They decided that Faith would need a sibling, someone who would be there for her and look out for her special needs.

In 2009, Billy and Krista were blessed with a beautiful baby boy. They called him Nate and from the moment he was born he was perfect in every way and brought such joy to his parents. But the joy and elation that Billy and Krista felt in having a healthy son would be short lived. In April, 2011, little Nate was also diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.

Billy and Krista struggle everyday to understand and cope with the hand they've been delt. Their children will require round the clock care and will have major obstacles to overcome their whole life. Faith and Nate must also have their blood sugar tested by pricking their fingers for blood six or more times a day. Failure to maintain the delicate balance between insulin, food and activites can result in life limiting and life threatening consequences. Our friends, Billy and Krista, live with a reality many of us will never have to deal with. They continue their daily fight to diligently care for their children's special needs but the road is long and the hills are high. They need our help! We can't take away the pain and the worry, but we can take away some of their financial burden, if only for a short time. Juvenile Type 1 Diabetes in children as young as Faith and Nate is rare and extremely challenging and frightening for parents.

Constant Attention

To stay alive, children with type 1 diabetes must have multiple insulin injections daily or continually infuse insulin through a pump. They must also have their blood sugar tested by pricking their fingers for blood six or more times a day. While trying to balance insulin doses with their food intake and daily activities, parents of children with this form of diabetes still must always be prepared for serious hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) and hyperglycemic (high blood sugar) reactions, both of which can be life-limiting and life threatening.

No Cure

While insulin injections or infusions allow a child with type 1 to stay alive, they do not cure diabetes, nor do they necessarily prevent the possibility of the disease's devastating effects, which may include: kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage, amputations, heart attack, stroke, and pregnancy complications.
